Polishing the Mirror of the Heart

The human heart is a mirror… The heart wants a constant care to keep it from getting rusted, and the rust may be produced as the mere touch of water can produce rust upon iron

Love is the source and animating force of the universe, the heart the wellspring and font of this love. And yet…Without constant care, the mirror-quality of the heart can become obscured: sweetness changed to sourness, tenderness to hardness, love to bitterness.

As a remedy to these eroding effects the course offers a path for engaging in the ennobling labor of polishing.  Fortified by sincerity, vulnerability, and the flame of love, we’ll learn to turn toward the dense rust producing sources within us.  These include: 1) the self-cherishing ego and the actions arising from this false view, 2) accumulated impressions and long-standing habits of mind, and 3) disturbances in the world and in the rhythm and tone of our lives. When purified through disciplined effort, patience, and the touch of grace, the natural goodness and transparency of the heart reveals itself.

Affirming our deep desire to become real human beings, the course integrates guided and silent meditation and prayer, inquiry – a supportive and intimate form of meditative conversation designed to see and understand ourselves – poetry and story, and spontaneous moments of individual and large group conversation. A highly experiential, communal endeavor, this is an invitation to bear witness to ourselves and one another as spiritual companions joined together to heal and transform the mind and polish the mirror of the heart.

The course is open to all. Attendance for the entire course is a prerequisite for participation.
