Straight from The Heart: A 5-Day Silent Retreat

If we are motivated to relieve suffering, deepen our meditation practice, and offer mindfulness-based vehicles for increasing well-being and human flourishing, we have before us a great challenge: the embodiment of these intentions. This is a lifetime labor, an alchemical process necessitating our willingness to be completely undone and transformed through constant intimacy with suffering and sorrow, joy, beauty, and love.  Such intimacy invites us into what Hafiz describes as “the city inside the chest” – the realm of the loving, wise, and brave heart.

Four decades into the adventure of integrating meditation, mindfulness, and MBSR into mainstream medicine, healthcare, and the broader society, experience makes resoundingly clear that the most vital work of human beings, including those of us aspiring to be teachers, is to become apprentices of the heart. Fierce and tender, fiery and loving, such an education will not be found in treatment manuals or protocols.

Grounded in experience, we’ll travel a different path. Through a daily schedule of sitting and walking meditation, yoga and movement, group and individual practice meetings and evening talks, this retreat is an invitation for you to become intimate with the “city” inside your chest and make it accessible and vibrant in your daily life and work.

Embedded in silence and infused with the spirit of befriending, we’ll:

  • Engage in the practice of mindfulness in its various forms and formlessness
  • Deepen our understanding of the principles and practices of mindfulness meditation and MBSR and the sources from which they emerge,
  • Attune ourselves to the tenderness and insight of the heart-broken-open and its transformative power in our lives and within the MBSR classroom,
  • Inhabit the self-revealing nature of the awakened heart as the intoxicating forces of self centeredness begin to dissolve and the sun of beneficence shines forth as care and kindness and our wholehearted commitment to affectionately accompany program participants into the unfolding of their lives.

This retreat requires no adherence to a particular faith tradition. It is open to all with prior meditation experience. This includes those seeking an in-depth immersion in silence as well as those aspiring to teach mindfulness, MBSR or other MBP’s in a range of institutional and social settings. This retreat fulfills one of the requirements for MBSR teacher education as designated by the Danish Center for Mindfulness at Aarhus University. Due to the intensity of this retreat we ask that you book your accommodation in Nørre Snede. Please find a list of suggested accommodation here.

Food: 950 kr (includes lunch, dinner, tea and snack). All meals are vegetarian. Lunch will be provided from an organic catering (Gotenborg). Dinner will be prepared as part of the daily karma yogi jobs. Please bring your own breakfast as this is not included.
